Ucetia, Gallo-Roman oppidum
The first traces of occupation in Uzès are found on the banks of the River Alzon, close to the source of the Eure. An oppidum was built at the top of the hill, and in the 5th century was known as 'Ucetia'. In 50AD, the Romans decided to tap the source of the Eure to provide water for the city of Nîmes. They built a 50 km long aqueduct, the main part being the Pont du Gard, which crosses the River Gardon.
Around the Rivers You can see the remains of the Roman Aqueduct just a short distance from the town centre, in the Eure valley. From the 'chemin André Gide', follow the yellow waymarks that follow theRiver Alzon. Return via the other bank.
