Some famous people from Uzès

Jean Racine : in November 1661, the great poet was his uncle's guest, the reverend Sconin, in the Ducal City for 18 months. From his stay in Uzès, he will have left a significant description of 17th century life in Uzès with his « Letters from Uzès » sent to his Parisian acquaintances.
Charles Gide (1847 - 1932) : born in Uzès on June 28, 1847, well-respected economist and professor at the Collège de France. Author of pan-cooperatism (the booklet École de Nîmes).
André Gide (1869 - 1951) : born in Paris and nephew of Charles Gide, this famous writer will be inspired by holidays spent in Uzès, especially in writing « Si le grain ne meurt » (If It Die: An Autobiography) in 1920-24. Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature in 1947.
Nicolas Froment (ca 1425 - ca 1485) : painter born in Uzès at the beginning of the 15th century, the famous triptych of the Burning Bush, his masterpiece exposed in the Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur d'Aix-en-Provence, was commissioned by King René of Provence.
Xavier Sigalon (1788 - 1837) : son of a schoolmaster and descendant of a very old protestant family, painted a very popular copy of the Sistine fresco the Last Judgment. His works can be found in Nîmes, Aigues-Mortes, Rome and Paris (Louvre Museum).
the de Crussol d'Uzès family has contributed a fair amount of characters to French history, the most well-known is without a doubt the Duchess Anne de Crussol d'Uzès, especially known for being the first Frenchwoman to have obtained a driver's licence, not to mention a ticket for speeding at 40 km/h.
