History of the Biennial
The town of Uzès, through its Cultural Office, has led an initiative in the fields of Arts and Crafts and Painted Furniture since 1994. It is based on the town's furniture heritage dating back to the 18th century.
It is the success of the first Painted Furniture Fair that revealed public interest in this activity. The high attendance rate of the first year (over 4,000 people) generated incredible enthusiasm.
This event is based on making it easier for craftsmen to acquire knowledge in the field of Painted Furniture.
It has promoted this activity throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon region and beyond. The Town of Uzès views this as an alliance of cultural, economic and tourism-related elements that come in addition to its natural advantages.
The "Painted Furniture" activity strikes a special chord in Uzès since it is based on its historic furniture heritage: the Uzès cabinet. For six years now, the Uzès Painted Furniture Fair has rekindled public interest in the Uzès cabinet. This activity is a three century old tradition. Initially, it consisted of having painted furniture made for the dowry, in a particular style, that of Uzès.
