06 - The King's Tower

This tower, which served as a prison up until 1926, was probably built at about the same time as the Bishop's and Bermonde (Duchy) Towers in the 11th and 12th centuries. The bond stonework is characterized by irregular protuberances, and is not unlike that of the Aigues-Mortes tower.
Within the 9m square tower, whose walls are 2.80m thick, there is the Saint-Gilles circular staircase. At present the only accessible room (which houses a permanent photo exhibition of the Flower Garden) is on the ground floor.
