Did you know that the Gard is one of the main truffle producing departments? Of course!
Regularly ranked among the five leading producer departments in France, it can some years supply up to 15% of the national production of the Tuber melanosporum, known as the « Périgord truffle ».
Uzège is the Mecca of this production, so much so that the headquarters of the Syndicate of Producers of the Gard is located in Uzès. It is also in this town that the truffle market is held every Saturday morning from November to March.
Don't expect to find an excessive amount of action on the Esplanade at this time of year, since most of the truffles are sold to dealers; the general public can however purchase this precious tubercular from a few producers, Place aux Herbes.
You can also purchase this delicious mushroom throughout the year thanks to a local truffle grower who sells them in jars.
