Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is the epicentre of a region that has always been dedicated to the Earth and Fire arts.
In 1991, Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie is the first site chosen in the region to appear in the Archipel des Métiers d'Art. In 1995, it is awarded the Ville Métier d'Art (City of Artistic Crafts) seal.
A dozen or so potters live and work in the heart of the village; they share high standards of professionalism and quality. We can visit their workshops and admire their creations. Amateurs of glazed earthenware, stoneware, raku ware, faïence ware… are always welcome. When wandering about through the narrow streets between the workshops, you'll want to stop and enjoy a glassmaker exhibit and maybe browse through some secondhand, design or framing shops.
A pizzeria and three restaurants will ensure you spend a pleasant moment in the coolness of a courtyard or in the shade of a pagoda tree. Bakers, confectioners, grocers and butchers attest to the commune's vitality.
Since July 1998, the Museum of Mediterranean Pottery, located in the Maison de la Terre (House of the Earth), presents a collection of 250 pieces, used from the 17th century to today, as an exhibit of what daily life was like in the countries bordering the Mediterranean. The ceramics are presented according to affinities of shape and colour in order to illustrate the influences, similarities and originality of Mediterranean pottery.
On the ground floor of the Maison de la Terre you'll find a permanent exhibition of beautiful utilitarian pieces selected from the workshops of Saint-Quentin potters as well as the Terra Viva gallery which blends art and everyday life, whether contemporary or more traditional.
In the Terre (Earth) workshop, both children and adults discover the art of pottery. Children's initiation takes place on Wednesday afternoons, one Saturday a month and during school vacations. Grade school classrooms can participate in Artistic Crafts Classes or Workshop Classes.
