Coming from Uzès on your way to Remoulins, you'll notice, on your left after the Pont-des-Charrettes, a very pretty little village latched on to the south slope of the hill: Saint-Maximin.
This premium site was occupied very early on as evidenced by a menhir statue, ancient coins, mosaic fragments, Roman aqueduct piping and various other pottery fragments discovered in the area.
Later on, in 1661-62, it was honoured by a visit from Jean Racine who was staying in Uzège at the time.
Take the time to explore this charming village of the south curled around the château, the Racine mission (17th century) and the church, which possesses beautiful classified organs (18th century). Stroll through its narrow and shady streets or its numerous little squares that beckon you to stay for awhile.
Lodges or seasonal rentals provide satisfactory stopover fare, inviting you to stay and discover the site and the «country» of which it is a part.
To see :
The Château of Reverend Sconin (17th century)
The organ (1843) of Saint-Blaise church
(11th century, restored in the 19th century)
Ruins of the Romanesque Saint-Eugène church
Visit of Saint-Maximin in summer.
